Sean has extensive training and experience in drama and dance, which he has combined with counselling and psychotherapy training to develop a unique movement-based approach to therapeutic work.
Sean studied Fine Art at Bower Ashton Campus (now part of the University of the West of England), and Sean’s intuitive ability, appreciation, understanding and knowledge of art and movement contributes hugely to the development, design and delivery of REM State’s work. Sean then began to develop his interest in dance and drama through work alongside some of this country’s leading choreographers (including Siobhan Davies OBE and Ian Spink), which greatly informed his understanding of the potential for the therapeutic use of movement.
In recognising the therapeutic potential of this work, Sean chose to extend his own practice further by qualifying as a Shiatsu practitioner in 1990 (having studied Healing Shiatsu with Sonia Moriceau) and through study of cranio sacral therapy. Sean continues to develop his understanding of the integration between mind and body in a very pragmatic approach to therapeutic body work.
Sean has worked in a variety of therapeutic settings. He trained and worked as a Relate couple counsellor, and worked for four years at a community self-help project within the Knowle West area of Bristol. He has also worked in Bristol at a centre run as part of the Aled Richards Trust, which exists to provide services for people living with (and affected by) HIV and AIDS.
Sean has combined the principles and techniques from these disciplines and experiences into a unique and holistic educational and therapeutic approach, using and exploring the use of myth, story and metaphor to better help individuals understand and develop the ‘narrative’ of their own life story. Sean works with individuals and groups of all ages, and runs a private practice through the Abbey Mead Natural Health Centre in Tavistock in Devon (see: www.abbey-mead.co.uk).
