Creating an Environment for Learning

A particularly significant and exciting development in the understanding and practice of this therapeutic approach is our work in schools. Our work with young people in specialist residential care has been developed and successfully applied within mainstream and special education settings nationally (including schools where young people are described as having emotional and behavioural difficulties). Our therapeutic work and training methods are included within teaching assistant induction training through Devon Education Services, and within the Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Foundation Degree programme at the University of Plymouth.

ImageWith increased interest around behaviour & attendance in schools and the launch of the SEAL (Social & Emotional Aspects of Learning) initiative, primary and secondary schools can now focus on the social and emotional aspects of learning for their work with children. REM State is working with secondary schools identified as pilot schools for SEAL within Devon, and with ‘lead SEAL’ primary schools in the County; we have also delivered training across the country to many other schools developing SEAL, including special schools.

Working across a ‘therapeutic-education continuum’ (recognising that emotional health is essential for effective learning), we also work with staff within the Educational Psychology Service in Devon. This work aims to develop a ‘common language’ for emotional health across Children & Young People’s Services (including Social Services, Primary Care Trusts, Looked After Care teams, Child & Adolescent Mental health Services [CAMHS], Youth Offending Teams etc.), and to build a shared understanding of the importance of emotional needs in ‘creating an environment for learning’.
